P1a: Heating houses
Energy Flow
Energy, in the form of heat, flows from a warmer body to a colder body.
When the temperature flows away from a warm object, the temperature of that object decreases
Measuring Temperature
A thermogram uses colour to show temperature
Temperature is a measure of hotness on an arbitrary scale
You do not need a thermometer
It allows on object to be compared to another
When the temperature of a body increases, the kinetic energy increases.
Heat is a measurement of internal energy
Specific Heat Capacity
All substances have a property called Specific Heat Capacity which is:
-the energy needed to raise the temperature of 1kg by 1 degrees celsius
- measured in joules per kilogram degrees celsius and differs for different material
energy transfered= mass × specific heat capacity × temperature change
Specific Latent Heat
- the energy needed to melt or boil 1kg of the material
measured in joule per kilogram and differs for different materials and each of the states
When an object is heated and it changes state , energy is transfered but the temperature stays the same
energy transfered = mass × specific latent heat
When a substance changes states , energy is needed to break the bonds that hold the molecules together
This is why there is no temperature change
