Modal verbs

verbos que "ayudan" a otros verbos
obligación, habilidad, permiso, posibilidad, consejo, prohibición
Su forma no cambia, No -s, -ed ni -ing
van seguidos de verbo infinitivo sin 'to'.
negación es not o n't.
1. Incorrecto= don't, doesn't o didn't.
En preguntas, siempre van delante del sujeto.
1. No usan do, does ni did.
Nunca pueden aparecer dos modales juntos
"can" (negativo: cannot, can't)
1. lo que eres capaz de hacer
  1. "He is so strong! He can lift that car!"
2. hablar de una posibilidad general
  1. "The weather here can get really bad."
3. decir que algo está permitido
  1. "He can borrow my book if he needs it."
4. Para hacer un pedido
  1. "Can you help me with my homework?"
"could" (negativo: could not, couldn't)
1. Como la forma del pasado de "can"
  1. "He said he couldn't come so early."
2. Para hacer un pedido de manera educada
  1. "Could you open the window, please?"
3. Para mostrar posibilidad
  1. "She could be with her parents."
  2. "may" y "might" son más fuertes
"may" (negativo: may not)

  2. más fuerte que "might"
2. Para pedir o dar información
  1. "You may sit down."
  2. "can" es la versión informal
"might" (negativo: might not)
1. Como una forma del pasado de "may"

  1. "He might pass the exam, but I wouldn't count on it."
"must" (negativo: must not, mustn't)

"should" (negativo: should not, shouldn't)

"will" (forma corta: 'll, negativo: will not, won't)

2. promesas o intenciones
  1. Leave it, I will do the dishes.
"would" (forma corta: 'd, negativo: would not, wouldn't)
1. forma del pasado de "will" en discurso indirecto
  1. "I won't be late." --> "He said he wouldn't be late."
2. una situación imaginaria
  1. "What would you do if you were a millionaire?"
3. un pedido de manera educada
  1. "Would you mind closing the window?"
4. ofrecer algo de manera educada
  1. "Would you like a drink?"
5. Para decir que quieres algo o que quieres hacer algo
  1. "I would hate to miss this opportunity."
