  1. Short Term Causes
    1. The Indian army issued a new version of the Enfield rifle. to use the rifle, it had to be bitten, but the cartridges were required to be greases with cow or pig grease
      1. this was against the religious beliefs of both hindus and muslims as the believed that cows are sacred and pigs are unclean , and so by giving the these rifles, the british were challenging their beliefs in an attempt to westernise their culture
      2. 5 sepots of the 3rd Light Calvary regiment were arrested for refusing to accept an issue of ammunition
        1. this sparked outrage and caused over 100 000 men to rebel
      3. Causes of the resentment of European Governers
        1. the British forcibly annexed the province of Sind, even though they had no right to the land.
          1. Punjab, Jhansi and Oudh were also annexed in the space of 8 years.
          2. The British took over 8 major states, covering an area of 250 000 square miles.
            1. The Indian Princes in these places were just pensioned off.
              1. they had no right to the land and yet they took it as if it was their own, and they overpowered their leaders and removed them for no reason but to benefit themselves.
            2. the British tried to force their ways on the indians in an attempt to westernise their culture.
              1. They made people convert to Christianity and to do other things against their religious beliefs.
            3. 1857, the indians were at breaking point. they began to become fed up of the policies of the british and started to rebel against their leadership
              1. 5 sepoys of the 3rd Light Calvary regiment refused to accept a new issue of ammunition.
                1. regiments mutinied and after killing their officers, marched to Delhi to start a massive rebellion against the british.
                2. the indian population were angered that their culture was being forcibly westernised and their land being taken over. they took goods from the Indians and exploited them.
                  1. by 1857, they were tired of being taken advantage of. The Indians fought for the british, gave them lots of goods for trade and gave them wealth and prestige, although receiving nothing themselves. the indians were tired of serving the british, and soon, their was a massive rebellion.
