Energy transfers
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only be changed from one type to another.
A TV changes electrical energy into light and sound.
A crane transfers chemical energy to g.p.e.
Sankey Diagrams
I'm not even going to try and explain this. Go and look at your notes, lazy.
Conduction of Heat Energy
In a solid the atoms are close together and cannot move- only vibrate.
In a liquid, the particles are close together, but only weakly bonded and are free to move.
In a gas, particles are far apart, not bonded and are always moving around.
Solids are good conductors because the vibrations can pass through them easily.
Metals are better conductors of heat than non-metals. This is because metals contain free electrons.
Gases are poor conductors because the particles are far apart thus making it difficult for vibrations to move through.
Liquids are better conductors than gases, but not as good as solids. (Surprise surprise)
Convection Currents
Convection is when hot fluid rises.
1: Particles are heated.
2: Particles vibrate (move) more.
3: Particles spread out.
4: Fluid less dense (lighter).
5: Hot fluid rises above cool fluid.
