Lawson illustrates that the life of the stoic people living in rural areas along the New South Wales western line live a monotonous and discoloured life which can be portrayed through the appearance of worn materials of basic nature with diversity only being displayed through the presentation of the crape displayed on the hats.

        1. "The only town i saw differed much from the above consisted of a box-barby humpy with a clay chimney and a women standing at the door throwing out the wash-up water".

With use jargon it has created an anticlimax feeling as the story continues to maintain a sense of uninhabited environments and the narrator perspective still lingers upon being pessimistic towards the Australia bush. Lawson has used notion of imagery to display the severe harshness of the rural communities that are isolated amongst themselves as there is not much life in both human and environmental aspects as there is limited activities being undertaken

            1. With the proficient use of adjectives through this quote it depicts a strong sense of cynicism and a remarkable distinctive image in the first line of the story.

            1. "Sit thus together while the sickly day light breaks over the bush".
              1. This personification links to the idea of a cynical and pessimistic cycle of lifestyle the drover’s wife has to overcome on a day to day basis. As a part of having a cynical lifestyle the drover’s wife endures countless challenge to overcome and the representation of the sun symbolizes the beginning of a new challenge.
            2. Incongruous juxtaposition
              1. "also her sewing basket and a copy of the young ladies journal."
                1. Incongruous juxtaposition is shown as it portrays how out of place the 'Young ladies journal is" and how she longs to be normal and civilised instead of being in the bush.
              2. Imagery
                1. "The sight of his mother in trousers greatly amused Tommy, worked liked a little hero by her side"
                  1. With the distinctive use of Imagery Tommy see's his mother taking over the role of the father. It is hard being a drover’s wife as she had to take over masculine responsibilities and roles.
