"Death is about the only cheerful thing in the bush".
Lawson illustrates that the life of the stoic people
living in rural areas along the New South Wales
western line live a monotonous and discoloured
life which can be portrayed through the
appearance of worn materials of basic nature with
diversity only being displayed through the
presentation of the crape displayed on the hats.
Jargon and imagery
"The only town i saw differed much
from the above consisted of a box-barby
humpy with a clay chimney and a
women standing at the door throwing
out the wash-up water".
With use jargon it has created an anticlimax
feeling as the story continues to maintain a
sense of uninhabited environments and the
narrator perspective still lingers upon being
pessimistic towards the Australia bush. Lawson
has used notion of imagery to display the severe
harshness of the rural communities that are
isolated amongst themselves as there is not
much life in both human and environmental
aspects as there is limited activities being
undertaken
Adjectives
"Draw a wire fence and a few ragged gums, and add
some scattered sheep running away from the train. Then
you have the bush."
With the proficient use of adjectives through this
quote it depicts a strong sense of cynicism and a
remarkable distinctive image in the first line of the
story.
The Drovers Wife
Personification and symbolism
"Sit thus together while the sickly day light breaks over the bush".
This personification links to the idea of a cynical and pessimistic cycle of lifestyle
the drover’s wife has to overcome on a day to day basis. As a part of having a
cynical lifestyle the drover’s wife endures countless challenge to overcome and the
representation of the sun symbolizes the beginning of a new challenge.
Incongruous juxtaposition
"also her sewing basket and a copy of the young ladies journal."
Incongruous juxtaposition is shown as it
portrays how out of place the 'Young
ladies journal is" and how she longs to be
normal and civilised instead of being in
the bush.
Imagery
"The sight of his mother in trousers greatly amused Tommy,
worked liked a little hero by her side"
With the distinctive use of Imagery Tommy see's his mother taking over the
role of the father. It is hard being a drover’s wife as she had to take over
masculine responsibilities and roles.
