GCSE PE The Circulatory System
  1. THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
    1. MOVEMENT OF BLOOD
      1. PULMONARY CIRCULATION
        1. This is where blood becomes oxygenated
          1. Deoxygenated blood travels from the heart to the lungs.
            1. Blood is oxygenated
              1. Blood then travels back to the heart to be pumped (delivered) around the body.
        2. SYSTEMIC CIRCULATION
          1. Oxygenated blood travels around the body to the cells where it is needed
            1. Oxygenated blood (02) is delivered & Deoxygenated Blood (CO2) is picked up
              1. This is then carried back to the heart.
          2. 2
          3. THE HEART
            1. The Heart contracts and relaxes pumping blood around the body. This is called a heartbeat.
              1. A performer's heartbeat will increase with exercise.
                1. WHY???
                2. 1
                3. 3 COMPONENTS
                  1. BLOOD VESSELS (3 TYPES)
                    1. CAPILLARIES
                      1. LINK the Arteries to the Veins
                        1. Extremely thin walls to allow 02 & CO2 Pass through their walls
                        2. VEINS
                          1. CARRY DEOXYGENATED BLOOD - C02
                            1. THINNER WALLS THAN ARTERIES
                              1. Valves ensure that blood does not flow backwards
                              2. ARTERIES
                                1. CARRY OXYGENATED BLOOD - 02
                                  1. THICK WALLS
                                    1. No Valves
                                    2. 3
                                  2. OTHER FUNCTIONS OF THE SYSTEM
                                    1. PROTECTION
                                      1. Antibodies carried in the blood to fight infection.
                                        1. Blood clots to seal cuts and wounds.
                                        2. REGULATES BODY TEMPERATURE
                                          1. Blood absorbs body heat and carries it to the lungs and skin to be released.
