THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM
  1. AEROBIC RESPIRATION
    1. OCCOURS IN THE PRESENCE OF OXYGEN (02)
      1. GLUCOSE + OXYGEN (02) ---> ENERGY + CARBON DIOXIDE (C02) + WATER
        1. Used when body is exercising over a long period of time - Must have a constant supply of 02 to work efficiently.
          1. GASEOUS EXCHANGE
            1. This is when the Oxygen (02) is taken from the air & Exchanged for Carbon Dioxide (C02)
              1. ALVEOLI
                1. These are small air sacs in the lungs where gaseous exchange takes place.
          2. ANAEROBIC RESPIRATION
            1. Occours in the ABSENSE of Oxygen (02)
              1. GLUCOSE --> ENERGY --> LACTIC ACID
                1. Can only be used for SHORT PERIODS
                  1. Muscles call on GLYCOGEN stores for ENERGY.
                    1. (GLYCOGEN is turned into GLUCOSE without 02)
                      1. LACTIC ACID is produced when our muscls work ANAEROBICALLY
                        1. LACTIC ACID... a mild Poison to muscles
                      2. THE RECOVERY PROCESS
                        1. After ANAEROBIC exercise the body must recover.
                          1. Extra Oxygen (02) must me taken in too 1) Pay the Oxygen Debt 2) Get rid of the Lactic Acid build-up.
                            1. STEP 1
                              1. Expiration of BREATH... CO2 OUT = LESS LACTIC ACID
                              2. STEP 2
                                1. PERSPIRATION... Releases Heat & Excess water
                                2. STEP 3
                                  1. EXCRETION... Releases Excess water & Other waste products from Lactic Acid
                              3. GCSE PE
                                1. 2.4 & 2.5
