Networks
1 LAN (Local Area Network)
1.1 Devices connected together over a small geographical area.
1.2 Connection methods
1.2.1 WiFi
1.2.1.1 Wireless Fidelity. A wireless method of connecting to a LAN.
1.2.1.2 WiFi has a longer range in comparison to Ethernet.
1.2.1.2.1 ...because the signal can be boosted with a WiFi range extender.
1.2.1.3 WiFi has slower data transfer speeds in comparison to Ethernet
1.2.1.3.1 ...because physical obstructions, such as walls, interfere with the radio waves.
1.2.2 Ethernet
1.2.2.1 A protocol (set of rules) that governs how data is sent between connected devices.
1.2.2.2 Ethernet has a smaller range in comparison to WiFi
1.2.2.2.1 ...because the range is limited by the length of the cable.
1.2.2.3 Ethernet has faster data transfer speeds in comparison to WiFi.
1.2.2.3.1 ...because the data does not get obstructed by barriers as it travels directly down the cable to its destination.
1.3 Hardware
1.3.1 Router
1.3.1.1 Enables a LAN to connect to a WAN (e.g. the Internet.) and enables devices to communicate with each other in a LAN.
1.3.2 NIC (Network Interface Card)
1.3.2.1 Installed in a device, such as a PC, to enable it to connect to a network by providing a means of communication between the device and the network devices (e.g. a router or switch).
1.3.3 Switch
1.3.3.1 Facilitates (Enables) communication between multiple devices in a LAN by directing data to the correct device.
1.3.4 WAP (Wireless Access Point)
1.3.4.1 Enables WiFi devices to connect to wired networks.
1.3.5 Ethernet cable
1.3.5.1 Cable used to connect devices in a LAN together.
1.4 Enables devices to share data.
1.5 Enables peripherals, such as printers, to be shared between devices.
1.6 Enables users to communicate via email (electronic mail).
