    1. Inflammation of the gastric mucosa
      1. Caused by infectious agent
        1. An injury occur to the protective lining of the stomach

            1. increased age- thinning and atrophy of gastric mucosa
            2. Epidemiology
              1. Seen in patients infected with helicobacter pylori
                1. Elderly patients that has atrophy of the gastric lining
                  1. Patients who ingest excessive amounts of alcohol
                    1. Regularly use NSAIDs
                    2. Diagnosis
                      1. Test for the presents of H. pylori
                        1. Endoscopy to detect inflammation
                          1. Barium swallow to detect abnormalities
                          2. Treatment
                            1. Antibiotics to kill H. pylori
                              1. Proton Pump inhibitors- block acid production and promote healing (protonix, prilosec, nexium, etc.)
                                1. Histamine 2 blockers- reduce acid production (Pepcid)
                                  1. Antacids- neutralizes gastric contents
                                  2. Clinical Presentation
                                    1. fullness, vomiting, epigastric pain
