  1. What does it mean?
    1. It takes on the assumption that members of an audience are not passive and instead respond and react to what they see and use it in their own lives
    2. A popular approach to understanding for mass communication
      1. An audience choose a media to suit their needs
        1. This results in competion from media formats to met the needs of the masses
      2. The message focouses on the auidence and consumers rather then the message of the media
        1. It suggest when we choice a media- it is chosen from one of the following:
          1. Identification- Being able to relate to the person/product through similar values or recongtion of personalities
            1. Education- Being able to learn and explore a knowledge or understanding of something
              1. Entertain- A form of 'escpaism' to forget about reality
                1. Social Interaction-the abilty for media to produce conversation between social groups
                2. Critisms
                  1. The public have no control over the media
                    1. The media have an unconsious influence over our lives
                      1. The media can manipulate what they produce
