Thinking - manipulating information mentally by forming concepts, solving problems, making decisions, and reflecting in a critical or creative manner
Concepts are mental categories used to group objects, events, and characteristics
prototype model - people look for "family resemblance" with an item's properties compared against other items
problem solving - finding an appropriate way to attain a goal when a goal is not readily available
problem solving process: find and frame problems, develop a strategy, evaluate solution, rethink and redefine problem solution
subgoals are intermediate goals or problems that we devise to put us in a better position for reaching a final goal or solution
algorithms are strategies that guarantee a solution to a problem
heuristics are shortcut strategies or guidelines that suggest a solution to a problem but do not guarantee an answer
fixation involves using a prior strategy and failing to look at a problem from a new perspective
functional fixedness - when an individual fails to solve a problem because they are fixed on a thing's usual function
reasoning is the mental activity of transforming mental energy to reach a conclusion
inductive reasoning involves reasoning from specific observations to make generalizations
deductive reasoning is reasoning from a general principle that we all know to be true to a specific instance
decision making involves evaluating alternatives and choosing among them
automatic - processing that is rapid, heuristic, associative and intuitive
controlled - slow, effortful, analytical
critical thinking means thinking reflectively and evaluating evidence
mindfulness means being alert and mentally present for one's everyday activities
open-mindedness means being receptive to other ways of looking at things
