Intelligence and Personality - Pyschology
  1. Cognition - the way in which information is processed and manipulated in remembering, thinking, and knowing
    1. B.F. SKINNER
      1. AI
        1. Thinking - manipulating information mentally by forming concepts, solving problems, making decisions, and reflecting in a critical or creative manner
          1. Concepts are mental categories used to group objects, events, and characteristics
            1. prototype model - people look for "family resemblance" with an item's properties compared against other items
            2. problem solving - finding an appropriate way to attain a goal when a goal is not readily available
              1. problem solving process: find and frame problems, develop a strategy, evaluate solution, rethink and redefine problem solution
                1. subgoals are intermediate goals or problems that we devise to put us in a better position for reaching a final goal or solution
                  1. algorithms are strategies that guarantee a solution to a problem
                    1. heuristics are shortcut strategies or guidelines that suggest a solution to a problem but do not guarantee an answer
                    2. fixation involves using a prior strategy and failing to look at a problem from a new perspective
                      1. functional fixedness - when an individual fails to solve a problem because they are fixed on a thing's usual function
                    3. reasoning is the mental activity of transforming mental energy to reach a conclusion
                      1. inductive reasoning involves reasoning from specific observations to make generalizations
                        1. deductive reasoning is reasoning from a general principle that we all know to be true to a specific instance
                        2. decision making involves evaluating alternatives and choosing among them
                          1. automatic - processing that is rapid, heuristic, associative and intuitive
                            1. controlled - slow, effortful, analytical
                            2. critical thinking means thinking reflectively and evaluating evidence
                              1. mindfulness means being alert and mentally present for one's everyday activities
                                1. open-mindedness means being receptive to other ways of looking at things
