2008 Sichuan Earthquake

Causes
1. Magnitude 8.0 earthquake
  1. Earthquake lasts for 3 minutes.
2. Tremors also felt in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Macau, Thailand, Vietnam, Mongolia, India, Pakistan and Russia.
3. Indo-Australian plate & Eurasian plate sliding past each other. This plate boundary could be seen at 龙门山 Fault.
4. Studies say the earthquake was caused by a dam.
Effects
1. Apporoxiametly 87,150 people were killed
2. 4,800,000 people were homeless
3. $137.5 billion was spent on damaged buildings
  1. 80% of the buildings were destroyed
4. Many rivers and roads were blocked by landslides
5. A lot of people were injured.
6. 2 aftershocks
7. Since schools were poorly built, a lot of children were killed at schools.
Responses
1. On Children's Day, parents come to schools and mourn their prays at their children who died. Students who survived also contributed. Parents also stayed behind to take part like cooking for the students.
  1. Also, parents blamed the locals for killing their children.
2. International Aid (for the first time in history that China did this)
3. Transportation links are all down (electricity, water, gas, WiFi)
