Resource summary

Edexcel - B2
  1. Topic One - Genes and Enzymes
    1. Cells and Microscopy
      1. Pant and Animal cells have similarities and differences
        1. Similarities:
          1. Nucleus - Contains DNA, controls what the cell does
            1. Cytoplasm - gel-like substance where most reactions happen
              1. Cell Membrane - holds cell together, controls what enters and leaves
                1. Mitochondria - where most respiration takes place
                2. Differences - only plant cells
                  1. Rigid Cell Wall - made of cellulose, provides support
                    1. Large Vacuole - contains cell sap
                      1. Chloroplasts - where photosynthesis occurs, contain chlorophyll
                    2. Bacterial Cells
                      1. They are much smaller than plant or animal cells
                        1. Chromosomal DNA - one long circular chromosome, controls activities and replication, floats free in cytoplasm
                          1. Plasmids - small loops of extra DNA, contains genes for things such as drug resistance, passed between bacterial
                            1. Flagellum - hair like structure that rotates to move the cell
                              1. Cell Wall - provides support for the cell
                            2. Cells are studied using microscopes
                              1. Light microscopes - 1590s, see nuclei, chloroplasts, mitochondria
                                1. Electron microscopes - 1930s, smaller things in more detail, internal structure of mitochondria and chloroplasts, plasmids
                                  1. Calculate magnification - length of image/length of specimen
