Ethnic differences in educational achievement
  1. INTRO
    1. Ethnicity: a person's cultural background based on factors such as religion and language.
      1. Educational achievement: how well a student progresses in school and how well they do as a result.
        1. May be seen to be a link between the two: e.g. a smaller percentage of Pakistani, black and Bangladeshi children gain five or more GCSEs than the white population, but Indian and Chinese children do better.
          1. However, people might argue ethnicity is not the only factor.
        2. B1: Cultural Factors
          1. this refers to language differences in the home that create a barrier in communication.
            1. e.g. a child is less likely to understand things at school if they find the language difficult.
            2. Ball
              1. parents' language barriers mean that they are unable to have good communication with their child's school.
                1. However this does not seem to affect the higher education levels of Indian and Chinese children.
