Working Memory Model -Baddely & Hitch (1974)
  1. Baddely and Hitch developped a multi-store model of STM, proposing that STM s made up of several different stores
    1. The model was based on results from studies using 'interference tasks'. If the ppts were asked to perform two taks simultaneously that use the same system their performance will be affected - the system can't cope with both tasks. However if they complete two taks using different systems, performance isnt affacted on either task.
    2. THE CENTRAL EXECUTIVE
      1. In charge of attention. It has a limited capacity and monitors incoming information and allocates tasks to it's two slave systems; the articulatory phonological loop, and visuo-spatial sketchpad.
        1. ARTICULATORY PHONOLOGICAL LOOP
          1. Holds speech based information. It contains; a phonological store (the inner ear) which stores the words you hear and an articulatory process (the inner voice) which allows maintenance rehearsal
          2. VISUO-SPATIAL SKETCHPAD
            1. Deals with temporary storage of visual and spatial information
            2. EVALUATION
              1. STRENGTHS
                1. Shallice and Warrington (1974) found support for the working memory moddel in the study of KF, as they found evidence for seperate systems within STM.
                2. WEAKNESSES
                  1. Many psychologist have critised the model as the idea of the central executive is too vague and simplistic. Their model doesnt explain the central exectutive other than it's involved in attention
