Meiosis
  1. Definition: A type of cellular reproduction in which the number of chromosomes are reduced by half through the separation of homologous chromosomes, producing two haploid cells.
    1. Function: Genetic diversity through sexual reproduction.
      1. Type of Reproduction: Sexual
        1. Occurs in: Humans, animals, plants, fungi.
          1. Genetically: Different
            1. Crossing Over: Yes, mixing of chromosomes can occur
              1. Pairing of homologs: Yes
                1. Number of Divisions: 2
                  1. Number of Daughter Cells produced: 4 Haploid cells
                    1. Chromosome number: Reduced by half
                      1. Steps: (Meiosis 1) Prophase I, Metaphase I, Anaphase I, Telophase I; (Meiosis 2) Prophase II, Metaphase II, Anaphase II and Telophase II.
                        1. Karyokinesis : Occurs in Interphase I.
                          1. Cytokinesis: Occurs in Telophase I and in Telophase II.
                            1. Centromeres Split: The centromeres do not separate during anaphase I, but during anaphase II
                              1. Creates: Sex cells only: female egg cells or male sperm cells.
                                1. Discovered by : Oscar Hertwing
    2. Comparing meiosis and mitosis.
      1. Mitosis
        1. Definition:A process of asexual reproduction in which the cell divides in two producing a replica, with an equal number of chromosomes in each resulting diploid cell.
          1. Function: Cellular reproduction and general growth and repair of the body.
            1. Type of Reproduction : Asexual
              1. Occurs in: All organisms
                1. Genetically: identical
                  1. Crossing over, no, crossing over cannot occur.
                    1. Chromosome number remains the same
                      1. Karyokinesis: Occurs in Interphase
                        1. Cytokinesis: Occurs in Telophase
                          1. Centromeres Split: The centromeres split during anaphase
                            1. Creates: Makes everything other than sex cells.
                              1. Discovered by: Walther Flemming
