'they got no family' how george
describes ranch workers lives
Steinbeck portrays no solution to the loneliness
Marrige doesnt solve it - Curley and his wife both still seem lonely
friendship doesnt solve it as Lennie and
George still also seem lonely
animals seem a temporary solution
however they dont seem to last long.
Companionship seems dangerous
Curleys wife is lonely and trys to get
companionship through the other workers
however it doesnt end well.
Crooks and Candy get attached and become
interested in Lennie and George's drem that
doesnt end well
Lennie is the only happy one
with a friend-but he ends up
dead .
DESCRIMINATION AND PREDJUDICE
SEXISM
Curleys Wife
has a dream she cant
reach-wont reach.
seen as a troublmaker
called
things like
'jail bait'
and 'whore'
women were seen as
lower class than
men
men assumed all
women were tarts.
RACISM
Crooks cant
stay in the
same room
as the
others
hurtful names such a
'Nigga' and 'Negro'
used to describe him
AGEISM
Candy
not respected
given a
bad job
dogs killed
called weak
Candys Dog
killed
because its
not useful
anymore
forshadowing
Lennies death
DISABILITY
when George tells Lennie that he
shouldnt speak to the Boss -indicates
he wouldnt be given a job if they
thought he was disabled
'oh i aint sayin hes bright. he
aint'-george telling the boss this
shows that otherwise he wont get the
job
Lennie is told not to talk to anyone
called stupid
if anyone knew he had
a disibility he wouldnt
be allowed to work and
so George tells people
he isnt bright.
AMERICAN DREAM
everyone on the ranch
has a dream but
because of the
circumstances they cant
have it
CURLEYS WIFE
wants to be a star
does'nt get her dream because shes trapped with Curley
GEORGE
has a dream
of a better life. it keeps
him going and
sometimes were not
sure if george believes in
the dream
LENNIE
CANDY
we can tell he has given up as he imideatly
gives all his money to George when they
are talking about their drem
At the end of the novel you realise no one is
going to get their dream. the same as a lot of
people at the time
DEATH
during the book death is a
common theme and it is used as
a forshadowing tool
we learn that death is a part
of life- it has to happen for the
cycle to start again.
in chapter 6 before Lennie returns , a heron catches a water snake ,
symbolic that life and death are part of nature and something we done
have control over.
Lennie accidently kills lots of things
A mouse
a puppy
eventually Lennie kills
something more than
an animal and kills
Curleys wife
