Geography: Tectonic Hazards
  1. Earths Structure
    1. At the centre is the Earths core - the inner core is a ball of solid iron and nickel and the outer core is liquid.
      1. Around the core is the mantle - semi-molten rock which moves very slowly.
        1. The outer layer of the Earths crust is very thin - about 20 km.
          1. The crust is divided into slabs called tectonic plates and are made up of two different types of crust.
            1. Continental crust is thicker and less dense.
              1. Oceanic crust is thinner and more dense.
              2. The plates move because the mantle underneath is moving.
                1. The place where plates meet are called boundaries.
                2. Types of Tectonic Plate Margins
                  1. Destructive Plate Margins
                    1. Two plates move towards each other.
                      1. Where a oceanic plate meets a continental plate, the oceanic plate is forced down into the mantle and destroyed.
                      2. Constructive Plate Margins
                        1. Two plates move away from each other.
                          1. Magma rises from the mantle to fill the gap then it cools, forming new crust.
                          2. Conservative Plate Margins
                            1. Two plates are moving sideways past each other or are moving in the same direction but at different speeds.
                          3. Earthquakes
                            1. Impacts
                              1. Primary
                                1. 1. Buildings an bridges collapse.
                                  1. 2. People are injured.
                                    1. 3. Roads, railways, ports and airports are damaged.
                                      1. 4. Electricity cables are damaged cutting off supplies.
                                        1. 5. Underground water and sewage pipes are broken, causing leaks and cutting off supplies.
                                        2. Secondary
                                          1. 1. Earthquakes can trigger landslides and tsunamis.
                                            1. 2. Leaking gas can cause fires.
                                              1. 3. People are left homeless.
                                                1. 4. People may suffer psychological problems.
                                                  1. 5. There's a shortage of clean water and lack of proper sanitation.
                                                    1. 6. Roads are blocked and destroyed so emergency services cant get through.
                                                      1. 7. Businesses are damaged and destroyed causing unemployment.
