    2. difference between WWW & the internet - the internet is a global network, the web runs on the internet .
      1. Uniform Resource Locator (URL) = The unique address each web page has.
        1. TYPES OF WEBSITES
          1. Portal - websites that provide a starting point, or a gateway to other sites on the internet.
            1. News - websites that provide information about current events.
              1. Business - Websites that sell products or services. Trading online is also known as eCommerce.
                1. Weblog - A website that is used to log online discussions or readings or to post online diaries.
                  1. Wiki - Websites that allow visitors to contribute and edit articles.
                    1. Online Social Network - Websites where users communicate with one another and share media with other users.
                      1. Educational - Websites that provide information about an educational establishment or to present information in an educational manner.
                        1. Entertainment - Websites that entertain and provide amusement
                          1. Advocacy - Site that describes a cause, opinion or idea.
                            1. Web Applications - Applications accessed through the internet that are used by the user.
                              1. Aggregator - collects specific information from other sites.
                                1. News, Review and Search aggregator (egs)
                                  1. Content Aggregator is usually linked to a Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feed - Where updates from a site are fed to an email account or website as requested by the user.
                                2. Personal website - Website created by an individual.
                                3. BROWSING & SEARCHING
                                  1. Web browser - Program used to locate web pages.
                                    1. Search engine - program that searches documents on the web for specific keywords and returns a list of documents where the words were found.
                                      1. SUCCESSFUL SEARCHING
                                        1. State what you want to find
                                          1. Identify Keywords
                                            1. Use synonyms
                                              1. Check your spelling
                                            2. Plug-in Applications - applications you might need to install in order to run a program. Egs - PDF reader, Flash Player, Java, RealPlayer, Quick Time Player
                                              1. CRITERIA TO EVALUATE WEBSITES
                                                1. Affiliation- Who supports the website?
                                                  1. Audience - Is the content appropriate? Who is the site intended for?
                                                    1. Content - Are the links working?
                                                      1. Authority - Who is the author, are their credentials listed?
                                                        1. Currency - Is the page up to date?
                                                          1. Is it easy to navigate?
                                                          2. World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) - The main international standards organization for the WWW.
                                                            1. their main function is to develop Web standards and their mission is to lead the web to its full potential.
