  1. Pollution: a substance that is added to the environment at such a fast rate that it cannot be broken down, stored or recycled.
    1. substances that cause pollution are pollutants ex.DDT
      1. when measuring very dilte substances we will use parts per million (ppm) and parts per billion (ppb)
        1. 1 ppm = 1mg/kg OR 1mg/L (1 mg of solute for every kg OR L of solvent)
          1. very toxic substances will be measure with ppb or ppt
      2. toxicity: the ability of a chemical to harm an organism
        1. Acute toxicity: when a chemical causes symptoms after single exposure
          1. chronic toxicity: when after exposure for a long time to the chemicals symptoms will finally show
            1. Lethal Dose(LD)50: The dose of a chemical that will kill 50% of the group it is given to.
              1. a measure of concentration of the substance in the body,
        2. Thalidomide: caused deformities in infants
          1. Penicilin: made by Alexander Fleming and its ability to stop bacterial infection
