How to Paraphrase

STEPS TO EFFECTIVE PARAPHRASING
1. 1- Reread the original passage until you understand its full meaning.
2. 2- Set the original aside and write your paraphrase on a note card.
3. 3- Jot down a few words below your paraphrase to remind you later how to use this material.
4. 4- Check your rendition with the original to make sure the new version includes all the essential information.
5. 5- Use quotation marks to indicate the terms or phraseologies you borrowed from the source.
6. 6- Record the source on your notecard in case of incorporating the material into the paper.

3. The mental process required for successful paraphrasing helps you to grasp the full meaning of the original.
HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARIZING
1. STEP 1
  1. Make sure your paper has any of these three elements:
    1. point
    2. main idea
    3. thesis
  2. Double-check assignment's indications to see either number or kind of source material expected.
2. STEP 2
  1. Take careful notes about all bibliographic information for your works cited page.
  2. Ask yourself the following questions:
    1. What is the author trying to explain?
    2. Why does s/he think these points are important?
    3. How has s/he decided to construct the argument?
    4. How does the structure of the argument affect the reader’s response to the author’s ideas?
    5. How effective is the author’s argument?
  3. Write your notes with the book closed to ensure that you are putting the ideas into your own words.
  4. Use quotation marks to distinguish the exact words used by the author from your own words.
3. STEP 3
  1. Locate the appropriate style manual.
    1. Determine the required style for your assigment.
    2. Find the specified style manual.
    3. For your own citation, plug in the information called for following the format of the formula itself.
4. STEP 4
  1. Ask your instructor for advice to avoid plagiarism
    1. Bring:
      1. draft
      2. notes
      3. sources
5. HOW CAN I TELL WHETHER I'VE PLAGIARIZED?
  1. Cite the source even if:
    1. 1. You put all direct quotes in quotation marks.
    2. 2. You changed the words used by the author into synonyms.
    3. 3. You completely paraphrased the ideas to which you referred.
    4. 4. Your sentence is mostly made up of your own thoughts, but contains a reference to the author’s ideas.
    5. 5. You mention the author’s name in the sentence.
