  1. Conduction
    1. How this works: As the temperature of a solid is increased, the particles vibrate more, so they gain more kinetic energy.
      1. The increase in kinetic energy is transferred onto nearby particles through collisions into each other, causing them to vibrate more.
    2. Conduction in Metals
      1. Metal atoms exist as positively charged metal ions in a regular lattice structure. The ions are surrounded by negatively charged electrons.
        1. some of the electrons are free and can move within the metal.
        2. Convection
          1. Convection occurs only in liquids and gasses. as a liquid is heated the particles gain energy
            1. This is when hot air rises up and then cools down then falls below the warmer air and the cycle starts again
