  1. Combustion: excess oxygen, forms CO2 and water
    1. CH3CH2OH + 3O2 --> 2CO2 + 3H2O
    2. Substituion: with halogens to form haloalkanes
      1. Ethanol + HCl --> chloroethane + water
      2. Esterification: alcohol + carboxylic acid --> ester + water (equiibrium mixture with conc. H2SO4 catalyst)
        1. Ethanol + ethanoic acid --> ethyl ethanoate + water
        2. Dehydration: alcohol -> alkene + water (pumice catalyst and heat)
          1. Oxidation:
            1. Primary: to al to carboxylic acid
              1. Secondary: to ketone
                1. Acid. K2Cr2O7 or KMnO4
                  1. Orange to green
                    1. Purple to colourless
                  2. Reaction with Na: gives sodium alkoxide + H2
