Definition
- A reading skill employed to obtain the general idea of a text, to find out writer's POV and to see how the contents in a passage are arranged.
- When a text is too long and we have limited amount of time, we use this reading technique
Tips for better skimming
- Glance at/read a document or report quickly, noting only main points
- Read the first and last paragraphs using headings, summaries and other organizers as they move down the page
- Read headings, sub-headings and illustrations
- Consider reading the first sentence of each paragraph rather than reading for comprehension
- Effective for finding dates, names of people and places, reviewing graphs, table and chart
