Film Poster Planning
  1. Layout- When deciding on the design and layout of my poster I looked at various posters from films of the same genre. Below I have included some posters which have given me strong ideas and inspiration in making my poster. Many film posters in the crime thriller genre have a similar layout and design to each-other.
    1. Colour Scheme - The colour scheme of the posters are usually very dark with grey's, blues and reds as a highlight colour. In many film posters the colour scheme of text and clothing often interlinks. This makes the poster more visually impressive and helps to establish a sense of brand continuity. Reds, blacks and whites are also often used on thriller posters, these colours help to establish a sense of danger and mystery which is associated with thriller films.
      1. Text- I have also observed that fonts on film posters match those shown in the trailer. This helps to establish a brand identity and helps the audience recognise that the poster is for the same film. They also help to establish a sense of differentiation from other posters and help the poster to stand out.
        1. Image - Main characters are also always shown on film posters. However, there is usually a maximum of 3 main characters displayed on thriller posters. For example, Sherlock Holmes has a number of main characters but only 2 are shown on this poster. As you can see below the main characters usually feature in the poster and we normally have a mid-shot or lose-up of these characters.
          1. While researching film posters I found 7 key elements which can be used to create a great movie poster. These were; Attention, Iconography, Interest, Appeal, Style, Lasting Appeal and Recognizability. I need to be able to incorporate all these elements if I am to make a quality film poster.
            1. Tagline- The tagline on a film poster also helps to establish a sense of differentiation between other films and posters, The tagline also helps to reveal aspects of the film without giving too much away. The tagline really helps to sell a film as it intrigues the audience into seeing the film. A key tagline such as "No one is safe", from the Safe House film helps to sell the film as it intrigues the audience as they may think why isn't anyone safe?
              1. Stars - On film posters when a big name actor is starring in a film, the film producers will use this to their advantage to help sell the film. This is because big name actors usually have a big following and lots of fans, when a film comes out that peoples favorite actors are srarring in they will go and see this. The 3 posters below all have big name actors starring in them and their names have been displayed on the poster.
                1. Date - The date of a films release is often displayed on the poster as it helps to attract audiences to see the film because they know which date the film will be available to see from. I will be including this on my poster as it provides audiences with key information as to when they can see the film.
                  1. Press Quotes - Press quotes are often displayed on a film poster to attract audience members to watch the film. The press quotes often help to advertise the film and a good review or quote of a film from a film critic will help to attract people to watch the film. However I feel that press quotes can often make the poster look cluttered and they can be hard to position in an area which is effective.
                    1. Director - Displaying the name of a well known director is used to attract audience members just like with displaying big name actors names. A big name directors films will have a big fan base and seeing their favourite director directing another film will make them want to see the film.
