Resource summary
Schubert
The genre, German Lieder is a song written for piano and voice, a typical feature of the romantic period.
The piano uses a low tessitura, and is highly supportive of the voice, purely used for dramatic timbre.
The employment of a wide tessitura, especially in the upper voice, is used to gain maximum dramatic effect of the words “Stalt” and “man”
The use of rich chromatic harmony, prepared and unprepared dissonances are a stylistic feature.
These include; carefully placed suspensions, false relations, Neopolitan and augmented 6th chords.
The use of the Tierce de Picardie is used to make a minor perfect cadence end in a major key having raised the 3rd degree of the scale
The use of a harmonic ostinato between bars1-4 within the piano part creates extended chromaticism as an expressive device used in the introduction
Word painting is an important feature of Der Doppelganger, the highly syllabic setting of the texts allows for greater clarity
the lyrics contextually involve the supernatural and tragic love, which is highly typical of the lied from this period.
The use of the dominant pedal is an important feature used as a harmonic and dramatic device.
For example in the introductory bars there is an inner F sharp pedal.
The manner in which Schubert extends the modulation to D sharp minor and indeed to distant and unrelated keys
The homophonic texture is a typical feature of Romantic Lied because of the piano accompaniments chordal progressions
for the imative treble part in bar13.
