I have chosen indie/alternative music as well as some famous pop artists as indie/alternative is the genre I
listen to most and it’s good to discover new bands but also using famous pop stars such as Rihanna in the
magazine will raise the profile of the magazine and gain it more readers and more attention. Also these are the
genres that NME focuses on and I want a similar target audience to them. Some examples of artists I would
feature are Jake Bugg, London Grammar, the 1975 and Lana Del Rey.
The target age for the magazine is 15-40 as it is for young people who like current music. The intended gender is male and female as this includes everyone and also allows
more people to buy the magazine. The music interest of the target audience is indie/alternative music lovers as this will be the main genre
the magazine will focus on. The reader may also buy downloads on itunes, and buy other magazines such as NME. They may also buy CDs but this is unlikely as they are going out of fashion but they may buy
Vinyls as this is currently a trendy thing to do for indie people to buy and listen to music with.
The reader will want to focus on serious music commentary as the magazine will focus on bands that aren’t
necessarily in the UK top 40 so it’s about good music and not just who is the most famous. It is also about
displaying new bands etc.
The USP is that I will focus on displaying new and upcoming bands. Current magazines that would be my
rivals are NME and Q. I would like the style of the magazine to be very alterative and cool looking, the content
will be based for serious music loves and not just focusing on the celebrity lifestyle culture and will feature new
and upcoming bands and artists.
I like the name Electric for the magazine or something along the lines of Voltage because it is like the
magazine is the hottest thing right now and is very modern. However I also like the name ‘Alt’ which is a
shortened word of alternative as the genre of the magazine is alternative music. For the key image on the front
cover I will take a picture of my friend so that the image isn’t copyright and maybe her holding a guitar to show
she is a musician and the mise-en-scene could be somewhere in a meadow to create that hippy, bohemian
look. The key cover line will be related to whoever is in the key image. I like the idea of using white for the
Masthead on a darker background so that it stands out. The price will be £3.49 once a month and this is so the
magazine is quality over quantity. The DPS will be an article on the person who is on the front cover to create a
sense of continuity.
