  1. 1. What new pull factor led to further emigration in 1849?
    1. 1. discovery of gold in one of the rivers westward was a new pull factor that changed the number of emigrants moving westwards hugely!
      1. 2. Because this 'gold fever' happened mid-dec docks at New York and Boston were jammed with people hoping to travel West and make their fortune
        1. 3. California was most affected as when people arrived in 1849 all the good mining spots had been taken so people toiled away at back breaking work for no more than $5 a day
        2. 2. What problems did the Miners face on their Journey? What conditions were they faced with once the arrived?
          1. they faced storms, seasickness, stale water/food, wagons could overturn, cholera, and other disease outbreaks
            1. the conditions they faced once they arrived were being introduced to hard work for very little pay!
            2. 3. How did Gold-Mining contribute to the settlement of the West?
              1. after work, the miners would go to the Saloon for their pleasures: gambling was v. common - what the miners earned what handed over to the shopkeepers which would therefore contribute to the settlement in the West!
                1. Also in Californian mining towns ,big businesses moved it, miners brought their families out and permanent towns began to develop!
                2. 4. How did mining affect Indian nations such as the Sioux?
                  1. as permanent towns began to develop the land the Sioux lived on was being restricted, white people would also kill the buffalo (indians source of food)
                    1. miners began digging the mines in the Black Hills - they were violating the Sioux's most sacred place!
                    2. 5. How was law and order dealt with in mining towns?
                      1. due to no US government law officers to protect them people had to make their own arrangements. They held a mass meeting where a chairman and officers were chosen.
