The nuns poured water over her, poked
her with sticks to rouse her
Religious imagery. Trying to remove the devil
from her? Trying to wash her from her unnatural
instincts?
She was lonely enough to ask this
creature to play with her
Brings out the naivety in Wolf-Alice. It
shows how although she is a Wolf and
therefore naturally takes a disliking
towards humans, the idea she actually
wants to play with one (herself)
emphasises how lonely she is. In
addition, it shows that the only thing that
distinguishes Wolf and Human is a
reflection.
Bury her excrement and cleanse
herself of her natural juices
She "buries" the blood as if it is a mistake and shouldn't
happen. Ironic because as a Wolf, they are unconscious about
being dirty and therefore shows both her sides.
Leap out of the tombstones and
scamper off towards the castle
It is ultimately her wolf instincts that allowed her to save the Duke
She grew up with wild beasts
This shows how Wolf-Alice has been
taught all she knows about the forests
from the Werewolf
Animal imagery
Her nose is sharper by night
By having these strong senses, Carter shows how
Wolf-Alice has learned the ways of the Wolf
unconsciously.
Wide shoulders, long arms
Carter emphasises the
sharp features of Wolf
Alice in order to
highlight how inhuman
she really is
Her pace is not our pace
Creates a us vs them connection within the
reader. Shows how although Wolf Alice is a
human, she is very much inhuman.
She never walks, she trots or gallops
Time
The flow continued for a few days,
which seemed to her an endless
duration of time.
Wolf Alice never seems to show a consideration to
time. However, now she shows that she is aware of
her surroundings and is slightly considering time
She had, as yet, no direct notion of past or of
future or of duration, only of a dimensionless
immediate moment.
Before this very human
experience, Wolf Alice had not
needed to be aware of time. She
lived impulsively.
She learned to expect these
bleedings, to prepare her rags against
them
She uses her period to determine the time
when no clocks are in the Den. The human
experience has helped her learn about
cycles
She understood the circumambulatory
principle of the clock perfectly
