      2. Seems scared of her
        When he imagines being told off
    2. George seems to be looking after Lennie because she would have wanted him too
      1. 'No, you stay with my. Your Aunt Clara wouldn't like you running off by yourself'
        George seems to want to respect her wishes
  3. Susy in Soledad
    1. Runs a Brothel the men go to on Saturday nights
      1. Whit says it's the best one because the girls are 'clean'
        Also says they don't put pressure on men
        Shows what most of the ranch hands are looking for in life
2. Men and Women don't Understand Eachother
  1. Men assume Curley's wife is a tart
    1. 'She's a rattrap if I ever seen one'
    2. She in turn assumes they are useless
  2. Curley doesn't understand his wife's needs
    1. Idea of 'being there' for her is covering his hand in Vaseline
  3. Men and women stereotype eachother
    1. Undermine each other's dreams
Dreams
1. George and Lennie dream of a better life
  1. Don't want to work on the ranch everyday until the die
    1. They are different
  2. Owning a farm
    1. Dream keeps them going through rough times
  3. We never see and evidence that the farm George talks about actually exists
    1. Even when Candy offers them money
  4. Not sure if George believes in the dream
    1. Sometimes seems he does
      1. 'I got to thinking maybe we would'
    2. Sometimes seems he doesn't
      1. 'I think we knowed we'd never do her'
  5. George changes his attitude towards the dream
    1. Chapter One he speaks rythmically
    2. Chapter Six he speaks monotonously
      1. George has finally accepted his dreams won't come true
2. People on the ranch are going Nowhere
  1. George says most men who work on ranches 'work up a stake and then they go inta town and blow their stake
  2. George believes that men like this 'ain't got nothing to look ahead to'
  3. Sometimes George dreams of his life
    1. Talks about having a girl, having an easy life drinking whisky, shooting pool and panning for gold
3. Some characters have Different Dreams
  1. Whit and Carlson are average guys
    1. Physically fit and able enough to make money to buy themselves whisky and sex
      1. Have no ambitions
        Might say because they have no dreams, they are never really happy or unhappy, they just exist
  2. Curley's wife dreams of being a movie star
    1. Never going to happen because she's trapped
