                                1. Many Nazis were against Christianity
                                  1. Its teaching of peace was incompatible with Nazi ideas

                                    1. Both promised to not interfere with the other
                                      1. Nazis tried to curb influence
                                        1. Led to Catholic protests against Nazi policies
                                    2. Hitler tried to unite the Protestant churches into one Reich church
                                      1. Placed the Nazi bishop Ludwig Muller at its head
                                        1. Some church members split off in protest at this state interference
                                          1. Formed the Confessing Church
                                      2. Many clergy who stood up to the Nazi regime were sent to concentration camps
