The Religious Settlement
The 1559 Act of Supremacy and the 1559 Act of Uniformity
Declared that Elizabeth was supreme Governor of the Church of England with the power of visitation.
Revived legislation that was repealed under Mary
Revoked Heresy Acts and the Papal Supremacy
Imposed an Oath on all Clergy and office holders to enforce conformity to the new Prayer Book
Set up a new system of punishment for those who failed to use the prayer book or whose who objected it's use
Ordered everyone to attend Church and fine those who didn't
Set ornamentation and clergy's dress should be as in the 1549 Prayer Book
Royal injunctions 1559 ordered clergy to:
observe the royal supremacy and preach against superstition and Papal authority
condemn images, relics and miracles
preach only with permission, which came in the form of a licence
report recusants to the privy council or to JPs
marry only with the permission of their bishop and 2 JPs
