Prop ideas A2 Media
  1. We are planning to shoot one of the scenes in a conventional Detective's office. Therefore, we will require: an ash tray, note pad, clipboard, cigarette pipe, 1950’s telephone, lamp, an alcoholic glass and a typewriter. These props will be effective in representing a typical Film Noir detective: a committed, hard worker who occupies a flaw. In this case, the alcoholic glass and the cigarette pipe/ash tray will connote that he is an alcoholic and a smoker. Furthermore, the use of the typewriter will signify his intelligence, whilst establishing his occupation and requirement to typewrite about his investigations. Also, the lamp will be appropriate in denoting the prop that provides light for his writing, especially during the night. This will therefore indicate that he works tirelessly to solve his crimes. Overall, the layout of the props will be quite untidy and rough, to connote a stereotypical hard-boiled and untidy male, whilst the objects will relate to the period of Film Noir.
    1. We are planning to source these props by borrowing them of friends and family, or using Amazon.co.uk. This will positively be cheap, considering that we are not a rich, funded company.
    2. The revolver is specifically for the Detective, connoting that this character consists of traits within Propp’s presentation of an antagonist, representing a darker character. Again, this links to the idea that the protagonists are often false heroes/anti-heroes within Film Noir because they are surrounded by crime and unafraid of hurting their enemies physically and verbally. Whereas, a true Propp protagonist would be represented as a hero with one objective: to save the world without causing harm to anyone. The darkness within this Detective will help to create the binary opposites of good vs evil and light vs dark, in order to create an ordinary film. Moreover, the machine gun and the toy knife will also create a sense of violence, but these weapons will be appropriate in denoting 1950’s gangsters. This will hopefully lead to a conventional approach of this genre, as well as being conventional to the horror genre.
      1. The use of the weapons: a revolver, a machine gun and a toy knife will all create a sense of violence, relating to the theme of crime and death in both of our film genres. These props will be effective in creating an entertaining trailer, with aspects of action, perhaps attracting the male audience because they stereotypically prefer violence. As a result, we will have to consider unique selling points that will engage the female audiences, this could consist of the theme of love or an inclusion of a Femme Fatale.
        1. We are also planning to source the weapons from our peers/family or Amazon. This process should be easy and quick in terms of time, so that we can focus on the production and our blog work
        2. Finally, we are planning to incorporate a crime scene within this trailer, since this location is conventional for Film Noir and Horror films. We have luckily found a perfect location accessible to the public, stated in the location shots, which will be effective for the crime scene. As a result, we want to denote a realistic investigation so Crime Scene Novelty Barrier Tape and Photo Evidence Frames, around 3-6m in length will certainly be effective, connoting that the Police have been involved. This will appropriately connect to the Detectives case, creating tension because it will obviously link to the other deaths, hence the antagonist.
          1. Again, we will source this prop from Amazon.co.uk, for a reasonable price of £12.99, consisting of 10 Photo Evidence Frames and a 6 metre Tape.
