'Growing Up' in Duffy & Pugh
  1. Mrs Tilscher's Class by Duffy
    1. Follows the transition of a child through a stage of innocence into them learning about sex from a 'rough boy'
      1. this is not seen as a negative though
      2. highlights the protection and 'love' provided by the teacher to cushion them from the harsher side of growing up
      3. Quetzals only come once by Pugh
        1. shows a mothers protection and control over a child through the metaphor of a kaleidoscope
          1. ultimately the parent has to stand back and allow the child to gain knowledge of the world without her protection
            1. we learn that being young is only something that happens once
            2. Education for Leisure
              1. the life of a young adult who's anger is seen to be part of the aftermath of a failure of the education system
                1. their youth has left them unprepared for the negative knowledge hinted at in 'Mrs Tilscher's Class' and Pugh's poem
                  1. Fueled with hate and anger brought about by them 'growing up'
                  2. SEXY TWIST
                    1. Mrs Tilscher's Class and Quetzals only come once show that 'growing up' is part of a natural process and though it can seem daunting and unwanted at times it ultimately leads to more knowledge, greater understanding of the world and is not seen as an over all negative.
                      1. Education for Leisure shows the opposite, growing up, an increase in knowledge about the world, moving out of a protective blanket has left the individual charged with anger than the system has failed them
                        1. Suggests that growing up is in fact, more of a negative than a positive. And the way youths are taught to grow up today not only has an effect on how they life but also how we live along side them
