Geography 1 - The Hydrological Cycle
  1. The hydrological cycle shows how water moves around
    1. It has different parts - the sea, the land and the atmosphere
      1. Water flows between the different parts in various ways, and is also stored on the land
        1. The hydrological cycle is a closed system. This means there are no inputs or outputs - the water just flows around the cycle
    2. 1. Water evaporates from the sea and the land
      1. Evaporation is when water is heated by the sun and turns into water vapour
        1. Transpiration is the evaporation of water from plants
          1. Evapotranspiration is both evaporation and transpiration happening together
      2. 2. Water vapour
        1. Moved inland by winds
        2. 3. Water vapour condenses
          1. To form clouds and then falls over the land as precipitation
          2. 4. Water moves from one place to another in many ways (called flows or transfers)
            1. Infiltration - water soaks into the soil
              1. Percolation - water moves vertically down through the soil and rock
                1. Throughflow - water in the soil flows downhill
                  1. Groundwater flow - water in rock flows downhill
                    1. Surface runoff - water flows overground
                      1. Channel flow - flow of water in a river
            2. 5. Water can also be held on the land in stores
              1. Channel storage - water is held in a river
                1. Groundwater storage - water is stored underground in soil and rock. A rock that stores water is called an aquifer, e.g. chalk
                  1. Interception storage - water lands on things like plant leaves and doesn't hit the ground
                    1. Surface storage - water is held in things like lakes, reservoirs and puddles
              2. 6. The water eventually ends up in the sea
                1. Where it evaporates and goes round the cycle again
