    1. did not like it :(

        attacked herefordshire with 2 welsh princes
        retreated in to hills before William arrived
        William made no attempt for submission
Northern Rebellions
1. 1st Northern Rebellion 1068-1069/70
  1. caused by Dainish fleet arriving in late August
  2. built castle in the region to prevent another rebellion
  3. Edgar fled up North (caused second rebellion)
2. 2nd Northern Rebellion 1069/70-1071
  1. Edgar goes to Scotland
    1. marries King Malcolm III
    2. leads the rebellion
  2. William goes up to the North
    1. Harrying of the North
      1. ranscaked the North
      2. destroyed all crops
      3. salted ground so nothing would grow
      4. famine fell and more than 100,000 people (Christian) perished of hunger
        some restorted to cannibalism
Ely Campaigne (Revolt) 1071
1. surrouned by marshland

    1. nobleman Hereward the Wake took over in summer 1070

Earls Revolt 1075

  1. Roger didn't like royal sheriffs
    1. Roger's daughter married Ralph
3. Ralph went to get forces and fled to Denmark
  1. His wife protected a castle
4. Roger tried to flee
  1. held up at the River Seven by Arch Bishop Odo
5. sent messgaes to Denmark for ships
  1. Looted towns
6. Roger lost land and was arrested
  1. Ralph had lost land
7. Wathelof told William about the rebellion

8. any other traitors blinded or had left hand cut off
Exeter Rebellion 1068
1. William went to Exeter with 500 men
  1. 4 miles from Exeter a delegation came and negotiated with William
    1. gave William hostages as exchange for co-operation
      1. destroyed Dorset towns on route
        came from north east
        arrived at east gate
        citizens refused William entry
        William not happy-blinded a hostage :(
        made tunnels under north gate
        after 18 days the wall collapsed
        entered city & citizens surrendered
        citizens swore on holy relics not to harm people or the city
        Gytha (H.Godwison's mum) exiled
        revoked change too taxes :) (cause of the rebellion)
        William built Rougemont Castle
        gave obscene guestures
        prepared for a long seige
