                2. FINDINGS
                  1. Infants can be classified into three broad groups
                    1. Securely attached (type B)
                      1. Explored the unfamiliar room
                        1. Subdued when mother left room but greeted her positively upon return
                          1. Mothers were sensitive
                            1. 66% of infants
                            2. Avoidant-insecure (type A)
                              1. Did not use mother as secure base when exploring the room
                                1. Were not concerned about mother's absence
                                  1. Showed little interest when mother returned
                                    1. 22% of infants
                                      1. Mothers sometimes ignored infants
                                      2. Resistant-insecure (type C)
                                        1. Showed intense distress when mother left room
                                          1. Rejected mother when she returned
                                            1. 12% of infants
                                              1. Mothers behaved ambivalently
                                          2. CONCLUSIONS
                                            1. There are significant individual differences between infants
                                              1. Most of the North American children observed were securely attached
                                                1. There appears to be an association between mothers' behaviour and infants' attachment type
                                                  1. Suggests that mothers' behaviour may be important in determining attachment type
                                                2. EVALUATION
                                                  1. Findings and conclusions are culturally biased to middle-class American infants
                                                    1. Cannot make generalizations about ALL infant behaviours
                                                      1. Lacks population validity
                                                      2. Strange Situation enables us to assess attachment between children and primary caregiver, and how attachment type relates to later behaviours
