What is a ratio?

1 A ratio is used to compare two
or more quantities. The symbol
for ratio is two dots (:).

2 For example, 12 red apples compared
to 20 green apples is written as 12 : 20

3 To put ratios in their simplest form,
divide both parts of the ratio by the
highest common factor. (HCF)

3.1 For example: 12 : 20 (divide both parts by 4) = 3 : 5

3.1.1 To express the ratio 3 :
5 in the ratio 1 : n, divide
both sides by 3.

3.1.1.1 3 : 5 =3/3 : 5/3 = 1 : 1 - 2/3
Or 1 : 1.6666....
