4d Distributed Databases
  1. Partitioned Database
    1. Horizontal Partitioning
      1. Data is separated based on records. e.g. all records with one specific attribute are stored in one place
        1. Each site can search from it's own records locally but have to use global search to find other records
      2. Vertical Partitioning
        1. Data is separated based on fields. e.g. ID and one certain field is stored in one place.
        2. Different parts of the data stored at different sites
          1. "Sites" can be a server or computer at a particular location
        3. Replicated Databases
          1. Entire database is copied for each site
          2. Central databases with Remote Local Indexes
            1. One central database is stored in one location.
              1. Indexes mean that when the record is searched for locally a request for the record is sent to the central data base
                1. Indexes have the primary key used to identify records locally and a foreign key, which is the primary key in the central database
