  1. Their wealth and reputation is based on the amount of land they own.
    1. The audience occasionally sympathises with Mrs Putnam.

        2. Mrs Putnam is warped. Stage direction is incredibly revealing of her motives.

          2. We are torn between opinions of them. At times presented emotionally, at others highly unsympathetically.
            1. Mrs Putnam is envious of Rebecca Nurse's healthy born children.

                1. Dramatic irony - the rumours are started by her and therefore she is the source and the starting 'wheel' and the flame that ignites the 'fire'.

                            1. Responsible for starting the hysteria surrounding the witch hunt.

                              2. Very wealthy, influential citizens of Salem.
                                1. 'Putnam! I had not expected such distinguished company, sir.'
                                2. Hold a grudge against Francis Nurse due to faction preventing brother in law from becoming minister.
                                  1. Argue with the Nurses over land boundaries and who should be minister.
