The audience occasionally sympathises with Mrs Putnam.

Mrs Putnam is warped. Stage direction is incredibly revealing of her motives.
1. 'She is a twisted soul of forty-five, a death-ridden woman, haunted by dreams.'
We are torn between opinions of them. At times presented emotionally, at others highly unsympathetically.
Mrs Putnam is envious of Rebecca Nurse's healthy born children.
'There are wheels within wheels in this village, and fires within fires!'
1. Dramatic irony - the rumours are started by her and therefore she is the source and the starting 'wheel' and the flame that ignites the 'fire'.
Accused of murdering innocent people for their land.
1. 'This man is killing his neighbours for their land!'
Putnam uses his influence and reputation to pervert the course of justice.
Embittered characters, devastated by the loss of their children.
1. 'A man motivated by greed.'
'A well-to-do, hard handed landowner, near fifty'
Mrs Putnam [unable to wait] shows her eagerness for accusing others.
Bitter and vindictive with a desire for revenge.
Responsible for starting the hysteria surrounding the witch hunt.
1. 'How may we blame ourselves?'
Very wealthy, influential citizens of Salem.
1. 'Putnam! I had not expected such distinguished company, sir.'
Hold a grudge against Francis Nurse due to faction preventing brother in law from becoming minister.
Argue with the Nurses over land boundaries and who should be minister.
