most effective therapy for schizos = drugs
e.g neuroleptics - chlorpromazine
+ family therapy
improve quality of life - chance to be "normal"
helps them to "function adequately"
helps them to manage alarming symptoms
Weaknesses:
e.g neuroleptics - chlorpromazine
only works on 1/3 with positive symptoms & ~ 1/3 pos&neg
side effects
sedated, dry mouth, blurred vision, difficulty concentrating
only treats symptoms not underlying causes
depends what you time are cause e.g. :
genetic - no not treated
social - no not treated
too much dop = yes
clozapine
expensive but fewer side effects
fatal blood disease in 1-2%
dependent on them = less control = more stressed
