SIR SYED AHMED KHAN.LIFE:-BORN ON OCTOBER 17TH 1817-RAISED UP IN AN ORTHODOX FAMILY-STARTED SERVICE IN THE EAST INDIA COMPANY-BECAME A JUDGE IN 1839 IN EAST INDIA COMPANY-BECAME A JUDGE IN 1846 IN DELHI-TRANSFERRED TO BINJAUR AS CHIEF JUDGE-HIS LAST DAYS WERE SPENT WORRYING ABOUT THE HEALTH OF HIS SON,SYED MAHMUD-HE PASSED AWAY ON 27TH MARCH 1898-HE HELPED RESTORE MUSLIM SELFCONFIDENCE,BUILT BRIDGES WITH THE BRITISH AND LAID THE FOUNDATIONS OF A MUSLIM POLITICAL AND EDUCATIONAL MOVEMENT.POLITICAL REFORMS:-HE TRIED TO PERSUADE MUSLIM LEADERS IN BINJAUR THAT FIGHTING THE BRITISH IS USELESS-HE WAS ON THE SIDE OF THE BRITISH DURING THE WAR OF INDEPENDENCE-HE WAS CALLED A TRAITOR AND A PRO-BRITISH MAN-IT DIDNOT MAKE HIM FEEL HAPPY-HE DIDNOT ACCEPT REWARD FROM THE BRITISH-HE WROTE A PAMPHLET 'ESSAY ON THE CAUSES OF THE INDIAN REVOLT'-HE TRIED BUILDING A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MUSLIMS AND THE BRITISH-HE RISKED HIS IMAGE BY WRITING THE LOYAL MOHAMMEDENS OF INDIA IN WHICH HE NAMED MUSLIMS WHO HAD WORKED FOR THE BRITISH BUT THE BRITISH HAD NEGLECTED THEM-HE ALSO WROTE THE TABYIN-UL-KALAM TO SHOW THE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN ISLAM AND CHRISTIANITY-HE HAD A BELIEF THAT THE BRITISH WERE TOO STRONG TO BE CHALLENGED SO IT WAS NO USE ATTEMPTING TO CHALLENGE THEM-HE WANTED TO BUILD RELATIONS WITH HINDUS BUT FELT AS IF HINDUS DIDN'T FEEL THE SAME WAY-HE WAS DISTURBED BY ATTEMPTS OF URDU TO BE REPLACED WITH HINDI AS SECOND OFFICIAL LANGUAGE AFTER ENGLISH IN NORTHERN PROINCES-HE THOUGHT THAT IF BRITISH LEFT INDIA,IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE FOR BOTH OF THEM TO SHARE POWER-HE STRONGLY ORDERED SEPARATE SEATS FOR MUSLIMS IN LOCAL COUNCILS-HE SAID THAT HINDUS AND MUSLIMS WERE DIFFERENT ENOUGH TO HAVE SEPARATE ELECTIONS-HE WAS GIVEN CREDIT OF THE FIRST MUSLIM TO SPEAK OF THE TWO-NATION THEORY-INDIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS WAS FORMED IN 1885 TO BUILD A GOOD RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HINDUS AND MUSLIMS.-SIR SYED REFUSED TO ATTEND THE FIRST MEETING-HE BELIEVED THAT HINDUS WERE WORKING FOR MUSLIM INTERESTS ONLY-HE FORMED A UNITED PATRIOTIC ALLIANCE WHICH LATTER BECAME MOHAMMEDAN DEFENCE ASSOCIATION-HINDU-MUSLIM CONFLICT ROSE-MUSIC WAS PLAYED IN MOSQUES AND COWS WERE NOT ALLOWED TO BE SLAUGHTERED. -HE SPOKE OF HINDUS AND MUSLIMS AS TWO DIFFERENT COMMUNITIES WHO NEEDED TO WORK TOGETHER EDUCATIONAL:-HE WROTE ATHAR-UL-SANADEED IN 1846-HE PONDERED ON THE TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANTAGE OF EUROPEANS OVER ASIA-HE REALIZED THAT EDUCATION WAS MORE ADVANCES IN WEST-WITH THIS HIS MAJOR OBSESSION BECAME THE EDUCATIONAL STATE OF THE MUSLIMS-HE BUILT A SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY AT GHAZIPUR WHICH TRANSLATED PERSIAN,ENGLISH AND ARABIC WORKS INTO URDU-THE SOCIETY HAD ITS OWN BUILDINGS AND A PRINTING PRESS--HE WANTED TO GO ON A VENTURE TO LOOK AT BRITISH UNIVERSITIES SO HE SOLD HIS LIBRARY TO GET MONEY-HE WROTE THE TAHDIB-UL-AKHLAQ IN WHICH HE TRIED TO PERSUADE THE MUSLIMS THAT THAT WESTERN KNOWLEDGE WOULD NOT HAVE A NEGATIVE IMPACT ON ISLAM-HE WAS CRITICIZED FOR HIS EMPHASIS ON SCIENCE-HE ARGUED WITH THE ULEMA ON CERTAIN QUESTIONS-HE EMPHASIZED THAT THE HOLY QURAN TOLD US TO LEARN KNOWLEDGE-HE PERSUADED ENOUGH TO COLLECT MONEY FOR A MUSLIM COLLEGE-HE WAS FORCED TO OPEN A SCHOOL WHICH LATER BECAME THE MAO COLLEGE IN 1875 WHICH BECAME THE UNIVERSITY OF ALIGARH-HE WAS FOLLOWING A MUSLIM TRADITION OF THE MUGHAL TIMES-ALIGARH UNI CONTRIBUTED TO THE CREATION OF PAKISTAN-LEADERS LIKE LIAQAUT ALI KHAN AND AYUB KHAN STUDIED THERE-HE WANTED MORE MUSLIM SCHOOLS IN THE SUBCONTINENT-HE ARRANGED THE MAO EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCE TO POPULARISE THE EDUCATIONAL METHODS AT ALIGARH-HE ARGUED THAT EDUCATION COULD COME UP TO ENGLISH STANDARDS ONLY IF STUDENTS WERE TAUGHT IN ENGLISH-HE BELIEVED THAT THE REAL VALUE OF AN ENGLISH STYLE EDUCATION WAS TO IMPROVE THE MORALS OF SOCIETY
