Temperature Measure of the hotness or coldness of a body Scalar quantity
Units SI unit - Kelvin (K) Degree Celsius (ºC) Both units are the same size and there is a fixed relationship between them
Celsius scale The two fixed points are the melting point of pure ice and the boiling point of pure water at atmospheric pressure This interval is divided into 100 equal parts
Kelvin scale The two fixed points are absolute zero and 0 ºC Interval is the same size as the degree Celsius 0 K = -273.15 ºC
Thermometric Property A physical property that changes measurably with temperature Length of liquid column (e.g. thermometer) Emf of thermocouple Pressure of gas at constant volume Volume of gas at constant pressure Resistance Colour
Calibration Curve A graph of the thermometric property against temperature, measures with the laboratory standard thermometer The new thermometer can be used by noting the value of the thermometric property at an unknown temperature The graph is then used to find the corresponding temperature
