P5a COMETS SATELLITES Have elliptical orbits as they are closer to the Sun at one end of the orbit. When the comet is close to the Sun the gravitational force is much stronger so it pulls the comet around at a high speed. When the comet is far away from the Sun the gravitational force is much lower. A satellite is an object that orbits a larger object in space Gravity is responsible for keeping the Moon in orbit around the Earth and the other planets around the Sun. A natural satellite is a natural object in space eg the Moon. An artificial satellite is one put into orbit by humans for things like satellite tv. The relation between distance and force is a squared one. Geostationary have an orbit time of 24 hours at 3600km above the equator. Thet remain in a fixed position above the Earths surface. they cannot be too close to eachother or their signals will overlap due to diffraction. Low Polar satellites orbit 100km above the North and the South poles. Most low polar satellites take around 90 minutes to do 1 orbit. They can see the whole Earth as it rotates beneath them. Satellite TV Long term weather forecasting Scientific research GPS - ships, cars, planes etc Military uses - spying Google maps - detailed Earths surface. Short term weather forecasting.
