In the field, we first measured the velocity of the water flow in the river. Here, my task was to measure out the distance of 10m between points A and B using a measuring tape. Then, I held the ranging rod at Point B and threw the tennis ball into the river. At the same time another girl was using a stop watch to time the tennis ball as it travels between the two points. We then repeated the procedure 5 times and calculated the mean time by dividing the distance of 10m by the time to get the mean speed in meters per seconds. Finally, we used Bergs Classification of Speed to determine the state of the river’s flow. We then repeated this process in the upper course site to see and compare if the river’s velocity was the same or had radically changed. After that, our findings were then recorded on our worksheet. Another gathering of information that we did was bedload analysis. Here, we gathered 10 random samples of rocks from the river bed and measured each sample along its axis with a meter stick. My personal task was to classify the rocks using the Power’s Angularity Chart and after returning the rocks to the riverbed in order to minimize damage to river life, I then worked out the mean size and the mean class for each rock. These findings were again recorded in our worksheet. Finally, the last gathering of information task we did was calculating the discharge. To do this we had to calculate the cross-section of the river first. To calculate the cross- section we used a measuring tape to measure the width of the river. Then using the meter stick we had to record the depth of each 50cm interval across the river. My individual task in this was to calculate the mean depth in metres and to calculate the cross sectional area. To calculate the cross sectional area, I multiplied the width of the river by the mean depth. Then after that I calculated this, I then proceeded to work out the discharge. To do this, I multiplied the cross-sectional area by the velocity in metres per second (m/sec). We then recorded this on our worksheet. Equally we recorded our gathering processes on camera, sketch maps, worksheets and photographs for later recall in the classroom. (393 words)

Then using this information we had from the getting the cross-section of the river we then had to calculate the discharge. To do this, we used the Cross-sectional area we got from the previous experiment and multiplied it by the velocity. For the upper course we multiplied 0.46m squared by 0.38 m/sec to get the answer of 0.17m cubed per sec. then for the lower course site we multiplied the cross-sectional area of 1.38m squared by .23 m/sec to get 0.32 m cubed per second.
