types of bonding - ionic, covalent, metallic

ionic:

- when a metal and a non metal react, atoms are transferred

metals- lose electrons and become positively charges ions

non metal : gain electrons to have a full outer shell, become negatively charged ions

ionic compounds are structured in a giant ionic lattice

- they have strong electrostatic forces of attraction between them so require more energy to overcome these forces

- can conduct electricity only when molten or in solution as then ions are able to move around and carry a charge

- they are referred to as salts ie: sodium chloride

potiive ions -> cations

negative inos -> anions
