USA in 1837-1846

• USA had interest in extending their commerce to Japan.
• Its first attempts were in 1837 and 1846 but they were beaten off by Japanese ships.

USA in 1853

• 
• On 8 July 1853, Commodore Perry arrived with four warships, using the "gun-boat diplomacy" request for various commercial agreements.
• The Tokugawa Shogunate fully aware of what happen to China in the Opium war decided to agreed in the Treaty of the Kanagawa in March 1854.
• End of Japan seclusion.

• Japan signed the Treaty of Amity and commerce with US in 1858.
• Similar treaties were signed between western and asian nations, and these soon became known as "Unequal Treaties".

• These led to much nationalist resentment in asian countries.

Japan after the treaties with US

• Nationalist people in Japan were opposed to the Tokugawa Shogunate , they wanted to continuing with the seclusion and advocated "repelling the barbarians".
