- 1Chapter 6: Person Finance. 1.) What are the 5 rules for playing the money game? (Fearn & Fearn, pg. 88) 1/31. Self discipline is work.
2. Opportunity costs.
3. Money is earned.
4. Money earns money.
5. Time is a younger person's friend and and older person's enemy. - 22.) Supporting detail #1 (Fearn & Fearn, pg. 89) 2/3To earn money, nearly everyone has to commit the effort (work). You need self discipline to go to work.
- 33.) Supporting detail #2 (Fearn & Fearn, pg. 90) 3/3In order for money to make money you must invest. An example would be to invest in a mutual fund. You leave X amount of money in the mutual fund, and it earns interest over time. You would earn more interest money using a mutual fund instead of a savings account, but you will earn interest on both.
- 44.) What is the relationship between seven and ten? (Fearn & Fearn, pg. 92) 1/3Money doubles every ten years at 7% interest.
- 55.) Supporting detail #1 (Fearn & Fearn, pg. 92) 2/3Compound interest means the interest earned on money invested becomes part of the money invested, so interest is always figured on a growing total. This is so important for everyone to know!
- 66.) Supporting detail #2 (Fearn & Fearn, pg. 92) 3/3Time is a younger person's friend and an older person's enemy corresponds to the relationship between 7 and 10 because the earlier we begin saving and investing, the more money we will accumulate. Like in the compound interest example.
- 77.) What two things effect the power of 7 and 10? (Fearn & Fearn, pg. 92) 1/3Inflation and taxation.
- 88.) Supporting detail #1 (Fearn & Fearn, pg. 93) 2/3Inflation effects the power of 7 and 10. Inflation means the value of money goes down every year. Basically you would need to invest/save where the interest rate is at least the rate of inflation which is 2% or the compounding interest wouldn't be actually doubling.
- 99.) Supporting detail #2 (Fearn & Fearn, pg. 93) 3/3Taxation effects the power of 7 and 10. Here in the US people pay about 30% of our income in taxes. We make demands on our government and our taxes pay for it. If you earn money from the power of 7 and 10 (compounding interest), then you will have to pay capital gains tax on it. Which lowers your actual profits.
- 1010.) How is money a "game"? (Fearn & Fearn, pg. 89) 1/3The game is played according to the 5 rules. People who do not know the rules, or know the rules but do not follow them, or ignore the rules because they are unfair, tend to lose making it a game. The rules are not hard but they do control the money system, and every student should know, at the very least, the basic rules of the game before leaving school.
- 1111.) Supporting detail #1 (Fearn & Fearn, pg. 91) 2/3In order for children to make money, they usually have to get creative. The usual things would be allowance, mowing lawns, and babysitting. But you also get money for your birthday and other special occasions that you could play the game with. THE KEY TO EARNING MONEY IS TO LOOK AROUND FOR OPPORTUNITIES.
- 1212.) Supporting detail #2 (Fearn & Fearn, pg. 95) 3/3What does enough mean? People who can not pay for what they need, do not have enough. People who can not pay for what they want do not have enough. People who can pay for their house, car, and everything else, but do not save and invest do not have enough. Each person has to decide how much their enough is.
- 13Chapter 7: Geography Matters 13.) What are the 5 geography themes? (Fearn & Fearn, pg. 104-105) 1/3location, place, relationships within places, movement and regions
- 1414.) Supporting detail #1 (Fearn & Fearn, pg. 106) 2/3Geography is a tool. It puts social studies curriculum in the context of location, place, relationships, movement, and regions. When you learn things in context, you will understand it better.
- 1515.) Supporting detail #2 (Fearn & Fearn, pg. 107) 3/3Examples of themes of study in geography: coffee, honey, equator, oceans, deserts, migration, agriculture, timber, snow, Waterloo, and Genghis Khan. You would discuss all of these in the context of where they are located.
- 1616.) What are the 6 geography standards that we teach? ( Fearn & Fearn, pg. 104-105) 1/31. the world in spatial terms
2. places and regions
3. physical systems
4. human systems
5. environment and society
6. the uses of geography - 1717.) Supporting detail #1 (Fearn & Fearn, pg. 104) 2/3Seeing the world in spatial terms means: mapping information about people, places, and environments. When you think of spatial terms you should think of how you use a map.
- 1818.) Supporting detail #2 (Fearn & Fearn, pg. 105) 3/3Human systems include: distribution, migration, cultures, economic interdependence, settlement, cooperation, and conflict. This means interactions between physical attributes of the planets surface and the people, flora, and fauna.
- 1919.) What is one of the more influential studies of geography curriculum? (Fearn & Fearn, pg. 108) 1/3Woods Hole on Cape Cod in 1959
- 2020.) Supporting detail #1 (Fearn & Fearn, pg. 108) 2/3It changed how curriculum should be viewed, changing the perspective. For decades, even centuries, education was the study of what teachers do. After Woods Hole, education became the study of what learners do.
- 2121.) Supporting detail #2 (Fearn & Fearn, pg. 110) 3/3There are 20 different geographic abilities that teachers can teach students. Examples include determining distance by reading a map, associate geographic aspects with current news, and determine compass directions by reading maps.
- 2222.) What three stories should teachers use geographic themes to enhance students understandings? (Fearn & Fearn, pg. 103) 1/3Maniac Magee
The Winter Room
Touching Spirit Bear - 2323.) Supporting detail #1 (Fearn & Fearn, pg. 104) 2/3Maniac Magee is set in Pennsylvania around the Susquehanna and Delaware River. It mentions Valley Forge, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, and Hollidaysburg. Pennsylvania is a rectangle, you could separate the state into quarters and talk about each region. So in reading this story you are teaching geography.
- 2424.) Supporting detail #2 (Fearn & Fearn, pg. 104) 3/3Touching Spirit Bear is set in Southeast Alaska, Tlingit territory, where people live in direct contact with animals of the forest and coastlines. The geographic focus is how people live together with the animals.
