  1. 1How can an insulating material become electrically charged?By rubbing the insulating material with another insulating material.
  2. 2When electrons are transferred from one material to another, what charge is the material the electrons leave left with and why?Positive because electrons carry a negative charge so if electrons "leave" the material, they also take their negative charge with them.
  3. 3How does a material gain a positive charge?When electrons "leave".
  4. 4How does a material gain a negative charge?By getting electrons.
  5. 5How does synthetic clothing become charged up by friction when on a person and why?The person moves and this makes friction between the clothing and the person's body so it makes the clothing cling. When the clothing is removed from the body, static sparks are sometimes produced. This is because the charge on the person discharges through them to the ground. this is called earthing.
  6. 6How can a charged object become discharged?By earthing it.
  7. 7What does discharging mean?Having any charge on a material removed.
  8. 8What happens when an object discharges?Electrons a transferred from the charged oject to earth.
  9. 9What can earthing result in if a person is charged? An electrosatic shock.
  10. 10Explain how touching a water pipe when you are charged can result in an electrostatic shock.A person can become charged up by friction between the soles of their feet and the floor if they are walking on an insulator such as carpet or vinyl. If they then touch a water pipe like a radiator, the charge is earthed. Discharge occurs, resulting in an electrostatic shock.
  11. 11What are the problems of static electricity in a factory with fine particles? Some factories such as flour mills and petrochemical factories, have atmospheres that contain extremley flammable gases or high concerntrations of fine particles.A discharge of static electricity (a spark) in these situations can lead to an explosion, so factories take precaturions to ensure no spark is made that could ignite the gases.
  12. 12What are some problems of static electricity?Static electricity is also dangerous in any situation where large quantities of charge could flow through your body to earth e.g. lightning.
  13. 13How can static electricity be a nuisance in some cases? It can cause dirst and dust to be ttracted to insuators such as television screens and computermonitors.
It can cause some fabrics to cling to your skin.
  14. 14Why will two insulating materials repel each other?Because they have the same charge.
  15. 15If a positively charged rod is held near another rod which is positively charged, what happens? The rods repell.
  16. 16If two insulating materials attract each other, what charge do they have and why do they attract each other?A different charge, because opposite charges attract.
  17. 17When and how does electric charge build up?When electrons are rubbed of one material on to another.
  18. 18A material that receives electrons becomes...........charged due to........................................................Negativley charged due to an excess of electrons.
