Flashcards
Simple Harmonic Motion flashcards
Flashcards do conjunto (10)
- 1What is Simple Harmonic Motion?Oscillation in which the acceleration of an object is directly proportional to its displacement from the midpoint, and is directed towards the midpoint.
- 2On a displacement against time graph, what does the gradient represent?Velocity
- 3How much of a cycle is velocity out from displacement?1/4 of a cycle in front.
- 4The sum of which two energies remain constant?Potential energy and kinetic energy.
- 5At which point during an oscillation is kinetic energy at its maximum? At the equilibrium position (the midpoint on an oscillation).
- 6Define free oscillations.Oscillations where there is no damping and no periodic force acting on the system.
The amplitude of the oscillations therefore remains constant. - 7What is the periodic force?A force that varies regularly in magnitude with a definite time period.
- 8Define forced oscillations.Oscillations of a system that is subjected to an external periodic force.
- 9When does resonance occur? When driving frequency = natural frequency.
- 10What is the natural frequency of an oscillating system? The frequency of free oscillations.
